Background
Enez, which was named Ainos in ancient times, was founded on a limestone peninsula at an altitude of 25 m from the sea, in the area where the Meriç River meets the sea on the northern coast of the Aegean Sea. Ainos was of great importance among the cities of the region, as it had sheltered harbors on the North Aegean coast in ancient times.
Hagia Sophia Church, which has an important place among Byzantine religious structures, is located at the highest point at the southeastern end of the castle. The Greek Cross planned building measures 21x38 m and is among the largest churches of its period. Hagia Sophia Church was converted into a mosque in 1456 after the conquest, destroyed in the earthquake in 1965 and abandoned after that date.
